Overseas Korean Camp day 6

The day started with a trip to 국립중앙박물관 (National Museum of Korea), where our destination was the Education Center to learn about 청화백자 (Blue and White pottery).

청화백자 is white porcelain painted with a blue pigment (cobalt oxide). The production was started in early 15th century in the Joseon Dynasty. At first we watched a video about the history of the porcelain and afterwards we were given an introduction on how to make our own design.

First step was to find a design. A lot of creative ideas were transferred to the tumblers and I had to get help from my mobile phone before settling on design to my liking. The next step was to transfer the design to the tumbler. For this a pencil was used. We did not have to bother about the graphite lines as these would disappear during the firing process.

Some final designs

The painting process was freehand. The more diluted the paint was the lighter the shade of blue would be. The paint would leave a greyish look but after the final firing it would turn clear blue.

We could easily have spent all day designing and painting details on our tumbler but after a few hours we had to finalise the paint job as we were leaving for lunch.

Restaurant

Our lunch we had at 색동저고리 한식전문점 (Korean Restaurant). 색동저고리 is a type of Hanbok with colored with colorful stripes. Traditionally this was worn by children. This is also displayed in the logo of the restaurant. We got tables in the tamati seating section. Where we got a full Korean lunch.

Next activity was a mission tour in COEX Mall.

Starfield Library inside COEX Mall

The library is a landmark in Seoul with it beautiful 13 meter tall bookshelf. This is a public library hosting more than 50.000 books and magazines.

A treasure hunting map was handed out with different locations marked in the mall. Using the map to navigate to each location would earn us a stamp. An interactive map was availabe, which we used for navigation. In here we also found a Ida-Marie’s favorite shop “Flying Tiger Copenhagen”. It was actually fun to visit the shop as all the items had Danish names with Korean descriptions.

Ttukseom

After the COEX stamp mission tour we headed to 뚝섬한강공원 (Ttukseom Hangang Park). This is an open park consisting of various amenities and is used for various cultural events and performances. In wintertime you can enjoy sledding and skating and in the summer it holds facilities for X-Games, artificial rock climbing and many more.

From here there was a beautiful view of 한강 (Han River). Across the river you could see one of the Olympic stadiums, to the left was Lotte Tower standing tall and to the right you could see Seoul Tower in the distance. Here we got a chance to take the traditional pictures next to the I-Seoul-U sign.

Restaurant Arirang House

We had dinner at the nearby restaurant 한강아리랑 (Arirang House). Besides serving dinner 한강아리랑  also have a range of other activities, like renting 오리보트 (Duck peddle boat) and hosting various business groups. See more on their homepage: http://www.hangangarirang.com/

Here we were served 치맥, which is a combination of fried chicken and beer. There were two different kinds of chicken, plain and spicy.

One of the volunteers were given Danish lessons by a lot of excited children.
